Philbert Heffron was the fastest rider when the new World Champion was to be found. And he received all the help he could get. Former two time champion Äme Anderberg helped Heffron on the final kilometers and even launched the sprint for him, something quite unusual for a top climber.
"This is just brilliant", says Philbert Heffron and continues: "My team basically allowed me to focus on my own goals this season. I spent the whole season preparing for the World's and I managed to succeed. It was however a struggle to get a free role on the team, being team mate with Äme Anderberg".
Philbert Heffron wasn't intended as the captain, but ended up Team Zyte's best option.
"I'm very happy with this result", says Nick Lissner and explains the tactics: "Äme [Anderberg] was the captain and looked strong today. However, with his potential, everyone was looking out for him. He tried attacking on the final 2 or 3 climbs, but everyone was at him right away. Instead a bigger group, where we also had Philbert Heffron in ended up fighting for the win. We agreed that we would be better of hoping for Heffron in the sprint, which surprised everyone. Äme [Anderberg] did a good job leading out for the sprint, and Phil [Philbert Heffron] was just unstopable. It was perfect".
The title is the 3rd title in Team Zyte's history, and Heffron will be the second Team Zyte rider to wear the prestigious jersey.
